Chronology: Sophia, a Person of Quality

There is little biographical information about this French woman, who called herself "Sophia, a Person of Quality."  She lived in France during the 18th century.

She is one of the first writers in France to advocate the full education of women. Her Woman, Not Inferior to Man was published in 1739 - years before the Englishwoman, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman

The work and its ideas was controversial. Her essay was rebutted in public by a 'Gentleman'. Her response was to write another work. This second work was published as Woman's Superior Excellence Over Man.   The "Gentleman" did not reply to this second essay.
