Many have been taught that philosophy began with the Greeks. The word philosophy may come from the Greek 'phil' or 'lover of' and 'sophia' ie., 'wisdom' but that does not mean that the Greeks were the first people who were 'lovers of wisdom'. Greek may have given us the term, but not the first practitioners of philosophy.  Lovers of wisdom existed in many cultures - some were identified as priestesses or practitioners of astronomy or astrology or healing --learned, wise women. Below you will find women philosophers indexed according to the period in which each lived.

Before the year 1000 CE

After the year 1,000 CE
